Regina Belmonte, who is the daughter of one of the Philippine Star’s founders Betty Go-Belmonte expressed her anger and disappointment over the decision of the Philippine Star to give Mocha Uson a column. In her tweet, she said: “The Star was founded with ‘Truth Shall Prevail’ under its masthead. To have Mocha Uson peddling lies in it is a disgrace to my lola’s memory.” Her tweet caused many reactions from the netizens showing their support to Belmonte’s outrage and disappointment. One netizen replied to her saying: “fight for it gurl!! Daming ibang matatalino who deserve that space.”
Mocha Uson, who is now an influential personality because of her intense support to President Duterte, shares her opinions about issues that include the government through her Facebook account and those opinions seemed to captivate readers of her blog and it is becoming quite toxic already. Her opinions seem to be illogical and somehow senseless, misleading people of what the true issues really are. So, does Mocha Uson deserve to have a column in the Philippine Star? I think not. Because it would only manipulate more people to thinking the same way as her—senseless and illogical and I think that would not turn out good for the Philippines. Filipinos need to be educated wisely and not otherwise. If Mocha Uson Blog on Facebook is already attracting readers and actually influencing them, how much more to be published in one of the leading newspapers in the Philippines? People’s opinions would only be shaped in a negative way and that is not good for us. I know that Mocha Uson is just exercising her own freedom of expression but there are certain limitations to that freedom most especially when not used properly. If continued, it would actually damage the Filipino way of thinking that might actually hinder our growth as people of this country. So, no, Mocha Uson does not deserve to be called a “columnist.” A columnist sheds light to the people about conflicts happening in the country. It does not share stupid and irrational opinions that seem to be completely biased. A column educates, not harms, and this move of the Philippine Star to give her a column is wrong, very wrong. Getting Mocha Uson as one of their columnists completely opposes their masthead that says “Truth shall prevail.” Mocha uson gives irrational opinions that will not educate the masses, it would only inflict harm that is entirely irreversible in the future. Therefore, that column should be given to someone much more deserving and who exercises his freedom in its right purpose, not to Mocha Uson. E
