By Mikkah F. Factor AFTER WALKING out from the session hall during Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s privilege speech on Monday, Sen. Leila de Lima swore to continue her job as senator despite being ousted as chair of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights. “Makakaasa po kayo: sa harap ng mga panggigipit na ito, patuloy akong maninindigan para sa katotohanan at patuloy kong gagampanan ang tungkulin ko bilang senador,” de Lima said in an issued statement. Cayetano, the former running mate of President Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 elections, accused De Lima of “destroying the image of the Senate and the Philippines” in his privilege speech.
“Simula pa lang, pilit na nilang hinahadlangan ang pagdinig ukol sa extrajudicial killings. Uulitin ko po: Hindi ako ang sumisira sa imahe ng Senado at ng ating bansa; ang tunay na nakakasira dito ay ang patuloy na mga patayang nagaganap dito sa ating bayan,” de Lima denied. She added that she walked out of the session hall on Monday in “protest” to what she claimed as plans of eliminating her and her search for the truth behind the alleged extrajudicial killings brought by the administration’s campaign against illegal drugs. Last Sept. 18, supporters of Duterte and Philippine National Police Chief Ronald dela Rosa gathered for a prayer vigil in Rizal Park, demanding the resignation of De Lima as senator. E
