By Joelle Alison Mae P. Eusebio and Christine Mae L. Fusio PRESIDENT RODRIGO Duterte assumed on Thursday the chairmanship for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2017, vowing to highlight the organization as a model of regionalism and a global player. Duterte, who is next in line in the alphabetical rotation of chairmanship based on Article 31 of the ASEAN Charter, asked other ASEAN leaders and dialogue partners for support to ensure "peace, stability, security, and growth" for the citizens while keeping the ASEAN united. “The Philippines is ready and willing to steer and guide the Association," Duterte said during his speech in the turnover of chairmanship in Vientiane, Laos.
He added that the cooperation and support of all ASEAN member-states and its dialogue partners were crucial to the realization of the organization’s goals, seeking to do regional efforts that would address terrorism and violent extremism. President Duterte accepted the Chairmanship from Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith during the ASEAN Summit in Vientiene. The Philippines hosted the ASEAN summit back in 2007 under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo focusing on how Southeast Asian countries can deepen the integration in order to foster the regional and international developments. Juancho Martinez, Political Science Forum President from the University of Santo Tomas told The Echo Today in an online interview that Duterte’s chairmanship drilled a strong point on him despite an awkward encounter with President Barrack Obama following his controversial remark, calling the US President a “son of a whore.” Martinez, however, said it was too early to predict the outcome of Duterte’s chairmanship. “He (Duterte) wanted to promote peace and security within member states,” Martinez said, adding that he hopes Duterte’s leadership will improve the ASEAN member-states’ relationship and Philippines’ own conditions.
