By Mary Noll Christine P. Caadyang PRESIDENT RODRIGO Duterte on Tuesday advised Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Japan to “be assertive” against government officials who subject them to extortion. In his speech at the Filipino Community Meeting in Tokyo, Duterte told OFWs to slap police, customs, or immigration officers asking for money upon return to the Philippines. “You create a scene. Tapos malalaman ‘yan, marami namang media diyan, [at] makukuha nila ‘yan kasi hiningian ka ng pera o kinuha ‘yong mga bagay-bagay mo,” Duterte said.
He added that complaints like asking favors or extorting money from both government agencies and officials may be sent through the 888 hotline. “[Mag]-text lang kayo. 888 man ‘yan. If you want to name the official, fine. Lalabas ‘yan sa TV so the people of the Philippines would know kung ano mang ginagawa niya,” the president said. Earlier in his speech, Duterte said he wanted to make life comfortable for Filipinos through his campaign against corruption, drugs, and criminality. President Duterte arrived in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday afternoon for a three-day official visit, where he is expected to meet Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other Japanese officials for a dialogue concerning economic and defense matters.
