By Christine Mae L. Fusio THE BUREAU of Immigration (BI) deployed on Oct. 18 immigration officers and intelligence agents at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for the influx of international passengers this coming holiday season. In a press release, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said NAIA intelligence agents will constantly monitor arriving and departing passengers at the airport. “We have specifically instructed our agents to be on the lookout for undesirable aliens, including suspected terrorists and drug mules, who might take advantage of the holiday break to sneak into the country,” he said.
Morente said the deployment of these officers will reduce, if not eliminate, the long queues of passengers at the airport counters. BI personnel were also directed to be doubly strict in monitoring departing travellers to prevent human traffickers and illegal recruiters. “They should be rendering counter duties at the airport where their services are most needed especially at this time of the year when we expect the volume of passengers at the NAIA to begin increasing steadily after the New Year,” Morente said. “This is the time of the year that we cannot relax our guard. We shall maintain the highest state alert throughout the holiday season to ensure that our borders are safe and secure,” he added. On Feb.16, government officials from the labor, transportation, and justice departments signed an agreement to improve airport security after the “tanim-bala” incidents on 2015. E
