By Maria Corazon A. Inay THE COUNTRY'S budding economic ties with China would bring more opportunities for Filipinos especially in terms of jobs, Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV said on Oct. 21. Aquino, former head of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, said acquiring investments from China is a move that the Philippines should explore. "I don't think na ibig sabihin ng pagkuha ng investments sa China ay may aawayin tayo na ibang bansa o ibang rehiyon gaya ng European Union," Aquino said in a statement.
Aquino, a member of the opposition to President Rodrigo Duterte's administration, said the pursuit of an independent foreign policy did not mean ending the Philippines’ current foreign relations, but giving the country more chances to pursue amicable relations with other potential allies. "[The government] must choose only what's best for our country," he said. The senator claimed that improved relations with China would also benefit many families and Overseas Filipino Workers who have relatives or are currently working there. Recently, Duterte made a four-day state visit to China, bringing along 200 businessmen. Duterte has since declared he would sever military and economic ties with the United States but insisted he would not completely break the alliance because the Philippines need the former in its fight for the West Philippine Sea. Aquino had filed Senate Resolution No. 158 last September, urging the appropriate Senate Committee do an inquiry regarding Duterte's foreign policy for better understanding of the legislative body. E
