By Jamie Andrea L. Turalba THE NATIONAL Youth Commission (NYC) criticized the dispersal of protesters at the United States (US) Embassy that happened on Oct. 19, calling the police response “heartless.” In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, NYC denounced the use of violence to “those who are supposed to be harbingers of peace.” “We strongly condemn this heartless move on the part of the police authorities to disperse the protest marchers whose cause is a legitimate concern,” NYC Chairperson Aiza Seguerra said.
The protesters at the US Embassy in Roxas Boulevard included activists from Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and various indigenous groups who wanted to cease the US from intervening with the affairs of the Philippines. The incident caused serious injuries to several protesters when a police van rammed into them as a move for dispersal. “However, we commend the [National Capital Regional Police Office] for its immediate action to relieve the nine members of the Manila Police Department (MPD) from their posts, including PO2 Franklin Kho, the driver of the police van that rammed and run over the protesters,” Seguerra said. Police Senior Supt. Marcelino Pedrozo, the commander at the rally who allegedly ordered the violent dispersal, was also relieved to make way for a fair investigation of the case. “We fervently hope and pray that the victims will be given all the necessary assistance as we also call on organizers of protest rallies to be always cautious about safety and security and try its best to resort to peaceful means to resolve issues being raised so as to avoid similar incidents in the future,” Seguerra said.
