By Doreen S. Galindez SUPER TYPHOON Lawin (Haima) has weakened since making landfall and may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight. In PAGASA’s Severe Weather Bulletin No. 12 issued at 8:00 pm, Wednesday, storm signal no. 5 was raised over Cagayan, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Ilocos Norte and Northern Abra, but was later on lifted around 6:00 AM Thursday. As of 4:00 AM its maximum winds dwindled from 225 km/h to 205 km/h, with gustiness down to 285 kph from 315 kph.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said in a public advisory on Oct. 19 be ready for the possible effects of Lawin as the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration predicts a typhoon stronger than typhoon Yolanda. Storm signal no. 4 is currently raised over Cagayan, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Mountain Province, Ifugao and Calayan Group of Islands. Signal no. 3 was given to La Union, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora. Signal no. 2 was hoisted over Batanes group of Islands, Pangasinan, the rest of Aurora, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Northern Zambales, Northern Quezon including Polilo Islands. Signal no. 1 was announced for Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, the rest of Quezon, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay and Metro Manila.
