By Erma R. Edera THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) was the only school from the Philippines that improved its place in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2016. UP moved up to the 374th spot this year coming from the 401-410 bracket last year out of the 800 schools that made it to the rankings. Records from the QS showed that UP excelled in three out of six factors used to monitor the progress of advanced education systems—academic reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, and international faculty ratio.
Other factors include citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international students ratio. Three other universities from the Philippines also made it to the world rankings once again, however not moving from their spots last year. Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) remained in the 501-550 bracket while the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and the De La Salle University (DLSU) did not move from the 701+ bracket. UST is still the sole university from the Philippines that has four QS Star ratings after earning a perfect five-star mark in four of the eight categories for excellence set by QS—employability, facilities, social responsibility, and inclusiveness. DLSU has the country’s most “impactful researchers”, as measured using the citations per faculty metrics, and was the only university from the Philippines to improve its ranking in employer reputation. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology remained the world’s top university followed by the Harvard University and the Stanford University while the National University of Singapore is still the leading school in Asia.
