Edera ROOKIE RAFFY Verano led the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles against the National University (NU) Bulldogs with a career high of 20 points on an 8-of-13 shooting, 65-50, in the second round of the UAAP Season 79 basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday. The rookie emerged for Ateneo as they pick up their second consecutive victory securing solo third in the standings with a 6-4 slate. Isaac Go also had a good outing for the Blue Eagles scoring nine points on an 80% shooting in nine minutes while GBoy Babilonia had six points and eight boards.
Aaron Black added seven points. Verano went on a 6-0 solo run, capped by a corner triple that brought the lead to 21, 60-39, and forced NU to call a timeout with 6:17 left in the match. NU was not able to recover from the big deficit up to the remaining minutes of the game. The Bulldogs committed 25 turnovers converting to 21 Ateneo points. With two minutes left in the third period, Anton Asistio and Verano hit their second treys of the game that stretched the lead back to 18, 48-30. J-Jay Alejandro topped the scoring with 13 points for the Bulldogs while Alfred Aroga contributed eight points and 16 rebounds. NU lost for the fifth time in a row coming from a 4-2 record but is now two games behind fourth-running Adamson University.
