Edera THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons broke into the win column after defeating a closely-fought contest against the University of the East (UE) with a four point lead at 75-71, in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena, Wednesday. Maroon’s Jett Manuel nailed a crucial jumper from the foul line to break a 69-all with a minute remaining, 71-69. After a few empty possessions for both teams, Manuel was fouled with 26.9 seconds left and hit two more free throws to make it a two-possession game. Manuel and Paul Desiderio led UP with 17 points apiece and combined for 14 rebounds. Dave Moralde also played well adding 13 markers while rookie Javi Gomez De Liano had seven points and seven boards.
The Red Warriors opened the game strong as they surged ahead with 19-8 start. Despite facing a big deficit early, the Fighting Maroons cut the deficit into one-point heading into the final quarter, 58-57. Mark Olayon finished with 15 points and six rebounds while Bon Batiller had 14 points for UE. UE dropped to 0-4 with only three games remaining for each team in the first round.
