By Aletha Jasmine C. Dela Cruz and Erma R. Edera THE NATIONAL University (NU) did it again for the fourth time. The NU Pep Squad bagged its fourth championship title in the UAAP Season 79 Cheerdance Competition held Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum. NU showcased a dazzling performance with a “cyborg” futuristic-inspired routine, earning 711 points that swept other awards in the Best Toss, Best Pyramid formation, and the Best Group Stunt.
The cheerdance champions only took one deduction to easily top the competition with less suspense after the power house University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad announced weeks ago that they would pull out from the competition this year. University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which finished second last year, dropped to fourth place with 650 points but remained as the winningest team in cheerdance with eight gold medals, same with UP. "Kine-claim namin na magfo-fourpeat kami ngayon hindi dahil sa kampante kami pero dahil sa alam namin kung ano yung kaya naming gawin at ipakita," National U Pep Squad coach Ghika Bernabe said. NU managed to win the race over UP in a four-peat mission. In the UAAP cheerdance history, Salinggawi was the only team to gun a five-peat from 2002 to 2006. The Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad and the Adamson Pep Squad made their comeback in the podium finish, placing first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively. With a broadway-inspired performance, FEU scored 658.5 points while Adamson was a few steps away with 655 points by its Hawaiian-themed showcase. It was Adamson Pep Squad’s first podium finish in 15 years. University of the East placed fifth (645 points) while the DLSU Animo Squad ranked sixth (560.5 points). The Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion finished last with 512 points. In the group stunts competition, NU still prevailed followed by Salinggawi and FEU, respectively. E
