Edera THE NATIONAL University (NU) Bulldogs escaped the late comeback attempt of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers with a seven-point lead, 75-68, in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday. UST recovered and discharged 16 points to cut the deficit to nine with 69-60 within the last three minutes of the game, but still fell short due to continuous free throws fired by NU. Jay-jay Alejandro bounced back from a scoreless performance against Adamson last Wednesday, capping off 16 points including 11-for-13 clip from the free throw line.
NU team captain Matthew Salem also posted 14 points and 10 boards as he exploded into a share of second. NU went up to a 3-2 record while UST dropped to 2-3. Bulldogs dominated the third quarter as Alfred Aroga increased the gap to as as high as 25 points, 69-44, following a layup from Med Salim with a little over a minute left in the period. The Growling Tigers rattled off five unanswered points to close the third quarter. Med Salim contributed 11 markers while Aroga scored nine of his 10 points in the third quarter for NU. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick start, opening a 27-15 lead in the first period pushing the lead up to 17 points, 46-29, on the first half. Birthday boy and team captain Louie Vigil scored 17 points while Jamill Sheriff added 16 points and seven rebounds.
