By Jan Carlo Anolin THE UNIVESITY of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers escaped a late game scare from the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors with a one-point lead, 88-87, to statch their first win in the UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Saturday afternoon. Chasing the Tigers by nine points in the last three minutes, UE ignited an 8-0 run to cut the lead into two, 87-85 with 36.1 left. Emil Palma tried to save the match by shooting right before the buzzer but still unable to capture the win.
“Ngayon nakapag-adjust naman kami sa defense namin like Renzo [Subido.] Nakita niyo naman na, sinasabi niyo rin na breakout game niya.Heto ‘yung hinihintay ko,” Growling Tigers head coach Rodil “Boy” Sablan told the Echo Today. Renzo Subido went on fire and had his break out game with career high of 26 points. Jamil Sheriff added 15 points while Marvin Lee had 14. Team captain Louie Vigil added 10 points. The Tigers tried to recover from their 21 turnovers during the first half with the help of Sheriff sparking seven points on the early eight minute mark of the third canto to close the lead to three, 46-49. Just after UST’s timeout, the Tigers gained momentum and sparked an 11-5 run courtesy of Subido and Jeepy Faundo. Nick Abanto and Edson Batiller led the Red Warriors with 15 apiece; Mark Olayon added 14. UST will next face the powerhouse De La Salle University Green Archers, Wednesday, September 14, 4 pm at the Mall of Asia Arena.
