Dela Cruz THE FAR Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws survived the late game run of the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons with a three-point lead, 51-49, to bounce back in the UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday. Monbert Arong fired a turn-around jumper to give FEU a three-point lead threatening UP with 14 ticks remaining. Javi Gomez de Liano sealed their win at 49-50 with 6.9 seconds left on the shot clock.
Arong finished with 14 points for FEU. With 2:48 remaining, Ron Dennison was ejected due to a disqualification foul on Paul Desiderio. Desiderio and Jett Manuel recovered from their early slump, exchanging baskets to the game at 47. The Fighting Maroons took chances to lead the game but Prince Orizu had tightened up his defense and blocked three of UP’s attempts. Both teams tallied a single-digit scoring during the first quarter, 5-4, the lowest score in UAAP history in a single quarter since 2003. Desiderio led UP with 15 points while Dave Moralde had 13. FEU improved with a 3-2 record while the Fighting Maroons slid down to 1-4.
